On your marks, get set, go! The Olympic train is off to London and the whole world is invited to board. Ok so there's not actually an Olympic train, but you could always take the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel? Whether you're travelling to London for the games or staying at home to watch events unfold on television it certainly promises to be an occasion not to be missed.
The reason the Olympic Games are so great is that there are so many athletes, competing across so many different sports. In fact 302 different events will be crammed into the two week period so there's plenty to get excited about.
But as good as the modern games are they have started to become a little bit predictable. The core events have by and large remained unchanged for the last 60 years or so.
Before the Second World War the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were more open to the idea of experimentation. Some of the sports on show were just bizarre, which made the whole occasion even more exciting.
